Ten Songs...

Listening to some music and refreshing my memory with their history from Wikipedia. Music player is Amarok, the best player ever! It tightly integrates with Last.fm to add to your listening experience. For example, when you play a song, Amarok fetches a list of recommended songs from your collection. Lots and lots features present in Amarok. Read up and be enlightened! Lets back to our musical journey. I play a song, then select the next from the suggested songs. I will be writing about my impressions on the song as well as the verse that has touched (pun may be intended at times!).

It all started with Break on Through (to the other side) by The Doors.

Psychedelic Classic. The starting on the song always puts me in a trance.

We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
But can you still recall
The time we cried
Break on through to the other side

Next up is my all time favourite song Sunshine of Your Love by Cream.

Bass, Guitar, Vocals, Drums, Lyrics everything absolutely perfect. By God this is a great song. Spellbinding to say the least.
It's getting near dawn,
When lights close their tired eyes.
I'll soon be with you my love,
To give you my dawn surprise.

Coming up is The Crystal Ship by The Doors. Artists will be repeated, get over that! Crystal Ship is an amazing song. The vocals of Jim Morrison is wonderful, especially when he starts the song. Lyrics alludes to heroin use, but it sounds optimistically tragic to me. Confused? Its a personal experience!
The days are bright,
And filled with pain.
Enclose me in you gentle rain...

The next recommendation I picked was by The Beatles. A song which reminds of me of childhood places and people, Penny Lane. It is supposed to be the same of Paul McCartney.
In penny lane there is a fireman with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the queen.
He likes to keep his fire engine clean,
It's a clean machine.

All of the above were from the sixties. Recommendations through me a great song released in 1980, Crazy Little Thing called Love by Queen. One of my favourite! The tune has been used in an old commercial, but I cannot place in which one (help people!). Freddie Mecury is my favourite vocalist though I listen to just a handful of Queen songs. He is simply great here. The bass notes in the song are a nice touch and wonderful guitar solo in the middle. Backing vocals have been used to a great effect as well.

I gotta be cool relax, get hip
Get on my tracks
Take a back seat, hitch-hike
And take a long ride on my motor bike
Until Im ready (ready freddie)
Crazy little thing called love

Next recommendation took me back to sixties again. An awesome song by Led Zeppelin, Dazed and Confused. Thundering JPJ bass notes to start. Wailing vocals by Robert Plant. Exceptional bow guitar (playing guitar like a violin) stuff from Jimmy Page and insane drumming by John Bonham. I confess that I nearly get an orgasm listening to this song!

Been dazed and confused for so long its not true,
Wanted a woman, never bargained for you.
Lots of people talk and few of them know,
Soul of a woman was created below. yeah!

Another Beatles song came next. While My Guitar Gently Weeps. A twist is that this song features Eric Clapton (the guitar god!) on lead guitar. Brilliant guitar work and a very distinct tune to say the least.

I look at the world and i notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps

Next came Who? Or rather The Who with their Substitute. A catchy song which I like immensely!

But I am a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but Im just back-dated, yeah

Almost all songs are classics and when you speak of classics, it would be a cardinal sin not to include Pink Floyd. They came next. But the song is one of their first during the Syd Barrett era, See Emily Play. I have written about Barrett earlier. This is a song which reminds me of being a child all over again. Sort of like fantasy only kids could cook up. Barrett was a genius and this song alludes to that fact. Fabulous!

Put on a gown that touches the ground, ah ooh
Float on a river forever and ever, Emily
There is no other day
Lets try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See Emily play

The final song is something I have been listening for quite sometime now. Heavy Fuel by Dire Straits. A song about decadence and the life of a Roadie.

Last time I was sober, man I felt bad
Worst hangover that I ever had
It took six hamburgers and scotch all night
Nicotine for breakfast just to put me right.

Man, that was one ride! Long time since a music post. Jay Amarok! Jay Last.fm!

Wonderful list! The best songs from that time. Right on about the starting tune of Light My Fire.

I'd add a few to the list -
Immigrant Song - L.Z.
I heard it through the grapevine - C.C.R.
Down by the River - Neil Young
Many many by C.S.N.Y.

I get carried away :)
